The College We Knew - Class of '64-'65 Photo Album.

- Where we lived in Paris -

The college had only been open for a few years when we arrived in 1954. Orientation was held in a student center down by Port d'Orleans, I believe. It allowed us all a few days to get to know each other before we splintered off, each in our own direction to digs arranged by Mrs. Delameter. Some had managed to procure apartments with other students, some were lodged with families, some in rented rooms, others in small, residential hotels. Some were evicted for various reasons and found themselves out on the street or shacking up with friends. Here are some samples. If you have any snaps, do send them.

My (Peter D'Aprix) digs-

Peters room spacer

I rented a room near the college from an ancient lady of approx. 4' 10". Rouged with 1920's style "heart" lipstick and very sweet.

The room was dark green painted panneling, a huge blue velvet covered bed, inlaid hard wood table, courtyard independant entrance and a long hall between me and the main apartment.

During an electrical workers strike, I had a party. The next day I discovered my land lady had died during her nap and was lying peacefully on her chaise longue. I hoped it was not our party that finished her off.

Leslie Clark (?)'s room with a family.

Erics room spacer

Eric Elbot has a maid's room on the 7th floor of a building near the college. No plumbing or cooking. Froze in winter. Water faucet down the hall and in the other direction the communal Turkish toilet. Neighbors were gendarme and wife with small child and working every night on producing another. Thin walls. Endless stair case.
